What is a High Altitude Balloon?

A high altitude balloon is a weather balloon, in this case a 1600g latex Hygoi weather balloon, that is launched with observation equipment.  In this case, the equipment contains:
  • Two still cameras, Canon Powershot A560, programmed to take a picture every 5 seconds using CHDK.
  • An trackduino APRS transmitter, transmitting the GPS location of the balloon at 144.390 MHz on the APRS network.  You can view the location at here.
  • An FM radio repeater using two handheld transcievers (Baofeng) and some connecting cables / filter.
  • A power supply for all of the equipment using eight standard AA alkaline batteries.
